BARK-ERY

Let’s spoil our furry friends! Making homemade treats is easier than you think, and it’s a great way to provide a limited ingredient snack. I have done tons of research to make sure the ingredients in these recipes is safe for cats and dogs. But before trying out these or any other recipes, please consult with your vet.

Below I’ve provided some information I’ve gathered on common ingredients and substitutions people may want to use in homemade treats. Please read through this and conduct your own research before feeding your furbaby!

Dogs

Flour – Whole wheat is best, but other wheat, rice and nut/oat flours are also safe.

Almond Milk – Safe in moderation. Check for an additive called xylitol – this is toxic to dogs. Even a small amount could put your dog at risk for hypoglycemia, liver failure and even death.

Soy Milk – Safe in moderation. It is typically higher in sugar, which can lead to tooth decay and obesity if consumed regularly.

Peanut Butter – Safe in moderation. As with almond milk, check the ingredient list for xylitol.

Onions/Garlic/Chives – Not safe in any form (raw, cooked or powdered). These can cause red blood cells to break down.

Cats

Tuna – Safe in moderation. Too much can lead to mercury poisoning.

Almond Milk – Safe in moderation. Check for an additive called xylitol – this is toxic to cats. Even a small amount could put your cat at risk for hypoglycemia, liver failure and even death.

Dairy Milk – Cats are naturally lactose-intolerant, so stay away from dairy products.

Peanut Butter – Safe in moderation, though it provides no nutritional value. As with almond milk, check the ingredient list for xylitol.

Onions/Garlic/Chives – Not safe in any form (raw, cooked or powdered). These can cause red blood cells to break down.
